The Broken Spoke (Digital) October 2024
Hello!
Can anyone else believe that this year is winding down so fast already? Wasn’t it just January last week? I guess it’s time for the ice racing events, then! See more about that in this issue.
Disclaimer: Hey there! The Calgary Sports Car Club does not currently have an official Broken Spoke editor. Instead, in the interest of getting club news out somehow, someway, it’s me. I don’t mind this task, if I have not a lot else to do … but I DO have a lot else to do. So, if being the editor of the Broken Spoke sounds interesting to you, why not give it a try! E-mail me: jamie.gray@cscc.ab.ca. The Broken Spoke goes out in a pdf version of a Word document, and the format is pretty much set up already. Easy peasy.

BREAKDOWN OF CLUB EVENTS 2024
It’s been an eventful year and we thought you might like to see the kind of things we all got up to. Thanks, David G, for putting together a list that shows we’ve been a going concern:
• We did two Ice Dice events (of four planned; weather was the issue) at MacGregor Lake. Note: for 2024/25, Ice Dice name is changed to Ice Cup because it will be run in conjunction with Dirt Cup (more on that, below).
• There was an Ice Dice Trophy night at the clubhouse.
• We ran one club track day on May 4, at Rocky Mountain Motorsports.
• We did not organize but still ran in autoXs put on by fellow clubs: Lethbridge Sports Car Club, Red Deer Sports Car Club, Northern Alberta Sports Car Club, Southern Alberta Solosport Club, Edmonton Rally Club, and others.
• We hosted a Women In Motorsports one-day event in May at the clubhouse.
• We hosted the CSCC 70th Anniversary Reunion in September at the clubhouse.
• We hosted our first “Fast Track” event, an information night for those new to motorsports, at the clubhouse. In attendance were representatives from Rally, AutoX/Track, a tire supplier (SpecR), a motorsports-oriented maintenance shop (VEX), and rally radio operators (Canadian Amateur Radio Association).
• The CSCC co-hosted the following rallies with RallyWest: Cochrane Winter Rally Rocky Mountain Rally Kananaskis Rally (upcoming)
• The CSCC hosted the following TSD navigational events: Snowball TSD Rally Mudlark TSD Rally Loop TSD Rally
• The CSCC will co-host the Loon Snark TSD navigational event with the Edmonton Rally Club in November.
• The CSCC will be co-hosting with RallyWest the Dirt Cup RallyX series at the Cochrane AG Centre (November 3, 17, December 1, 15). The 2024 Dirt Cup will be run with the 2025 CSCC Ice Cup (formerly Ice Dice) and competitors will be able to participate in championships on just dirt, just ice, or in both for a combined championship. Stay tuned for more details.
COMING UP: KANANASKIS RALLY The Kananaskis Rally will run on Saturday, November 9 (recce) and Sunday, November 10 (race). Volunteers are always needed (guaranteed best seat in the house!) and spectators are welcome. Please contact Rob Jackett at rob.jackett@cscc.ab.ca for more info. You can also find info on the CSCC website here: https://www.cscc.ab.ca/kananaskis/.
COMING UP: LOON SNARK TSD RALLY From the Edmonton Rally Club Facebook page: “TSD Rally fans!!!! The LOON SNARK Rally is coming soon!!!! The ERC, in conjunction with the CSCC, heard you! You want, and we’ll deliver! November 22nd/23rd TSD rallies (Time, Speed, and Distance) are run on public roads and a driver and a navigator have to follow the precise route the organizers have laid out and maintain precise timing so that the rally team is always at a specific place at a specific time. The object of the event is to follow the organizers’ directions and timing instructions and while this seems easy, sometimes the directions are not so easy to follow dependent on the nature of the instructions. The speeds set are always below the posted limits, and all rules of the road are expected to be obeyed at all times.
Scoring for TSD events usually is determined by arrival times at the very cleverly hidden checkpoints the organizer has along the route. A TSD rally is NOT a speed event, and early arrivals at checkpoints result in a higher score than being similarly late. Navigational rallies are run in rural or less populated areas and provide challenges to both the driver and navigator. Interpretive abilities and team work are the skills needed to succeed. This is an inexpensive way to get involved in rallying, and you can do it in your grocery getter! Save the Dates! More to come!”
COMING UP: DIRT CUP / ICE CUP 2024/25 It’s official! Dirt Cup 2024 is ON. November and December will see four events (weather permitting), run on dirt at the Cochrane & District Ag Society grounds just west of Cochrane. From the registration site (here: https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/dirt-cup-1-by-cscc-rallywest-cochrane-district-ag-society-calgary-sports-647255), “Dirt Cup is a timed driving competition in which entrants drive one at a time along a course defined by cones. The course is on a mixture of dirt, gravel, ice, and snow.” Pricing is $74 for CSCC or WCMA-affiliated club members, and $99 for general public. All the info you could want is on the registration page, so go get signed up!

ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES Would you like to see your product or service featured in The Broken Spoke? I’ve decided we’re not going to charge advertisers because I’m not getting paid to do this, so I do what I want. If you’ve read this far, you deserve it. Send me your ad graphic.
That’s all for now! Enjoy the leaves changing and falling, and get out to see (or participate in!) a rally or something.
