First off, congratulations to everyone who competed in Dirt Cup this year. This is our first Dirt Cup RallyX series since Race City closed in 2011. You’ve all helped to make it a success. Thank you for your contributions.
We had 59 different drivers compete in at least one event in this first Dirt Cup series in 13 years, and 24 drivers competed in at least three events. We had 6 female competitors and 13 “young guns”, under the age of 25.
For the first time, we had a Ladie’s Championship this year. Christine drove her ’04 WRX to wins in all three events she competed in to take 1 st in the Ladies Championship with a perfect score of 300. She was followed closely by Jamie in 2 nd who by running in all four events gave Christine a run for her money, and Kathryn, who only ran the last two events, and did well in enough in them to finish 3 rd . In all, six ladies participated in the championship.
Thanks to Debbie for the suggestion that we run a “Young Guns”
Championship for drivers under age 25. In our “Young Guns”
Championship drivers ranged in age from 16-25. Alexander
grabbed the top spot in Dad’s 1993 Plymouth Laser. Alexander
also won the overall championship in his first season competing
with us. Troy finished 2 nd in the same antique Plymouth. Garrett
finished 3 rd in his antique Golf. In all, 13 Young Guns competed,
which bodes well for the future of the sport. For all three of these
top finishers, these were the first rallyX events they have run.
They also did well in the overall championship, finishing 1 st , 5 th ,
and 7 th overall. Well done!
In RWD, Kevin carried over his recent success in Ice Dice to take
the RWD Championship in his ’85 Corolla Rally Car, but Patrick
gave him a real run for his money, winning event #2 to come in
2 nd . Pat wielded his long and large ’02 Lexus Wagon to an
amazing 3 rd overall finish, following the old adage of ‘run what you
brung’.
In FWD, Cole took three wins to finish first with a perfect 300
score in his 2009 Civic. Garrett, a young gun, who was
competing in his first ever RallyX events, finished 2 nd in the
championship in his 1987 Volkswagen Golf. Looks like you’re
going to have some competition in the future, Cole. Chuck used
his experience to beat the other 3 drivers who drove Dave’s Acura
TL and came in 3 rd .
In AWD, Alexander took two wins in his dad’s 1993 Plymouth
Laser to David’s one (which was also accomplished in the Laser.
Thanks, Matt.) and Alexander was close enough in time to David
to take 1 st in the AWD Championship. David took 2 nd in his 2012
STi, and Troy did well enough in the three events he competed in
to finish 3 rd , also in the Laser. In a class usually dominated by
Subaru, an antique Plymouth won.
The overall Dirt Cup championship is based on your best times
combined from the morning and afternoon runs relative to all
drivers in each event. The scores are based on the best time
divided by your time. Consistency is what wins championships.
Finishing on top for the first time is Alexander, who was a rookie
in this series, in their 1993 AWD Plymouth Laser. Finishing a
close 2 nd , less than ½ point behind is David in their 2012 AWD
Subaru STi. In 3 rd , leading the 2WD charge is Cole in his 2009
Honda Civic Si. Cole’s nemesis, unfortunately, was the course
that he himself designed for Event #3. Otherwise, he had more
wins overall than the top two.
The top cone killer in the 2024 Dirt Cup Championship was
Johnny, who killed 26 cones in only 2 events. He was followed
by Quinton who killed 24 cones in 3 events and Alexander who
killed 21 in 4 events.
In the FTD Championship, David in their STi surprised by beating
Alexander for 1 st in FTD. FTD is only your single fastest run of the
day, not the morning + afternoon times that are used for the
overall championship. David’s consistency in FTD won him this
title. Alexander finished 2 nd , beating Cole in 3 rd by less than a
point. Honorable mention goes to Troy who finished less than 0.2
points behind Cole courtesy of a win in the final event.
