DEBRIEFING! Let’s Break Down the Results of Some Recent Events
Events are happening all the time and every place, of course, but we focus on debriefing those
hosted, cohosted, or supported by the Calgary Sports Car Club.

PACIFIC FOREST RALLY and ROCKY MOUNTAIN RALLY
By all accounts, the rallies were a great success, with good weather and road conditions.
There were a good number of spectators (see some of them in the photo, below) and few
incidents. Rather than us reiterating everything, there is lots of great and complete info to be
found on-line at https://youtu.be/dPhFFVyY5ek?si=yPVt0CWjbjl_wvI2 (Pacific Forest Rally)
and https://youtu.be/rguzk5xlXJY (Rocky Mountain Rally).
Many thanks to all volunteers, whether organizing, working radios, directing traffic,
keeping folks safe, or the plethora of other roles needed!
Please note that the next rally test day is Sunday, July 14. More details will be available soon.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to fire them our way: info@cscc.ab.ca.

AUTOX AT YYC
Our club doesn’t host any autoX events ourselves, at the moment, because rather than
doubling up on the number of events in the area which are already excellently run, we have

chosen to simply point our members in the direction of those events. To that end, we were
very glad to see that the YYC lot near the airport has been re-opened to autoX. The first event
of six at the old park-and-jet lot, all run by the Southern Alberta Solosport Club, was held on
June 9. It was reported that the lot was a bit dusty (despite lots of effort spent cleaning it) and
therefore a little slippery until worn off by tires over the morning. There was something like
70 entrants and a number of spectators, so congratulations SASC on a great event!

ICE DICE 2024 AWARDS
It’s a few months since the end of our 2024 Ice Dice season, but that’s not going to stop us from
celebrating the souls that braved lake ice in all sorts of weird weather conditions to get out and
do winter autoX. We have winners in eight categories: all wheel drive, all wheel drive studded,
front-wheel drive studded, rear wheel drive, rear-wheel drive studded, first place overall, second
place overall, and third place overall. Please join us at our July board meeting, where we’ll
include an awards ceremony (all winners will be informed and invited well ahead of time). That
will be on Thursday, July 4, 7:30pm, at 4215 – 80 Avenue NE. All award winners are welcome
to have beer on us! For everyone else, the beers/pops are cheap and cold, and we always have
chips. Please come and hang out with us in our club’s excellent clubhouse!

CLUB REUNION AND 70-YEAR CELEBRATION
When we held a reunion at the clubhouse last year, it was incredible to see about 60 people show
up to catch up and reminisce. As that was so much fun and 2024 is the club’s 70th anniversary,
we’re going to do it all again. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! And join us at our September
board meeting (Thursday, September 5) at 7:30pm for a very brief board meeting followed by all
the visiting and eating of cake (or consuming of beer) that anyone could wish for. Keep an eye
on Broken Spoke newsletters and our Facebook page between now and then for updated
information.

WHAT’S ON YOUR WISH LIST? QUESTIONS FOR YOU!
We continue our quest to draw members back to the clubhouse for fun, get-togethers, and
education. But we need your input! So, please let us know what YOU’d like to see happening at
the clubhouse? It’s a great space. We already do monthly meetings and the occasional in-house
event. Would you like to see more movies? Ladies’ events? Televised international race
viewings? Educational stuff? Wine tastings? (I don’t know … maybe wine is what gets people
coming out to stuff …) Please let us know!

WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND?
The Broken Spoke is just me yakking away. Blah blah blah. I’m sure you’d be interested in
hearing from others. Such as your own good self! Send some of your own wordcrafts! Write an
article. Debrief an event. Send photos. Have you taken an interesting road trip? Purchased a new
car? Would you like to review a car? How about getting a debate going: manual vs. automatic?
electric vs. not? any other incendiary topic? Bring it! Your submissions are welcome and they
don’t have to be grammar- or word-perfect. I’ll fix everything right up.
CSCC MONTHLY BOARD MEETING AND INFO
Please note that our July board meeting will be held on Thursday, July 4 at 7:30pm. We’ll
include an awards ceremony for our 2024 Ice Dice season. The beers and pop are cold and we
always have chips. See you at the clubhouse (4215 – 80 Ave NE) – all are welcome, including
the kiddo’s!

CALGARY AMATEUR RADIO ASSOCIATION (CARA) NEWS
You may be aware that CARA has provided ham (remote) radio support at our rallies for some
decades. They have an office/station in the basement level of the clubhouse and you may have
noticed their radio towers in the yard. They are an enthusiastic and friendly bunch, passionate
about education and practice. You’ll see them at the rallies doing tests and exercises while they
keep everyone safe and informed via radio. They oversee clubhouse maintenance issues, as well;
which most recently have included some much-needed repairs to electrical outlets, the reinstallation of a land-line phone, clean-up of extra equipment from the yard, and the building of a telephone station in the entrance-way (which holds and hides their generator). They keep an eye
on water levels in the basement (a problem in the past) and provide security for the building.
These folks are friends and allies, so say hello when you see them, either in the clubhouse, out
working on their towers, or out in the forest at a rally. On top of everything, CARA has received
a donation of some lovely cedar boards, which they’ve proposed we can group together with
them to build a deck onto the south end of the clubhouse. Outdoor meetings and get-togethers
appeal to anyone else? That brings me to:

HELP NEEDED!
Please let us know if you would be interested and available to help build a deck on the south end
of the clubhouse. We can’t do it with just a couple of people. Eight or ten reasonably able folks
would be needed to haul, lift, and construct in a single-day event. We have free wood waiting for
us on a trailer, which we need hauled to the clubhouse yard to be stored until construction. We’re
hoping to complete this before the snow flies. Please drop me a line (jamie.gray@cscc.ab.ca) to
let me know if you’re in, and I’ll start a contact list so I can keep everyone informed. Cheers!

UPCOMING EVENTS THAT MAY INTEREST YOU
If you are a racer, you know that we are now in the very thick of race season. There’s a LOT to
choose from over the summer. The following is just a selection of what’s happening from now
until the end of August. Attached to the e-mail via which this newsletter has been sent, is a
document for your info, that lists everything running from Fort Saskatchewan south up to the end
of the year. Because there are some stellar autoX events happening with other clubs, the CSCC is
not planning to host any, but rather we point you in the direction of all the good stuff already
going on, and we’ll see you there! If you have any questions, fire ‘em our way: info@cscc.ab.ca.

ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES
Would you like to see your product or service featured in The Broken Spoke? Selling ad space

These days, we use funds to cover events. You can help out the club by advertising, and we can
help you by promoting your business (the digital version of the Broken Spoke goes out to almost
700 people). A full-page layout will run $50/issue. Contact us anytime.
That’s all for now! Enjoy this great weather and you know the drill: sign up for something and
