The Broken Spoke – April 13

Hello everyone!

Looks like the snow is (mostly!) gone, so here’s hoping you’ve got that car out of the garage and wheels are back on because WE’RE GOING RACING.

Events are going to start piling up, with lots to choose from. We can consider ourselves spoiled, especially this soon following covid years since a lot of recovery and rebuilding has had to happen. So, choose a few or a lot, get out there and make some memories!

FAST TRACK:  HOW TO GET ON TRACK (FREE EVENT!)

Fast Track: figuring out how to get to the goal faster. If we’re talking asphalt (or ice or mud or forestry trunk road!), we’ve got all the info you need to get racing! Please join us at this FREE event at the clubhouse on Thursday, April 18, 7-9pm, where industry professionals and dedicated drivers give you all the 411 you could need on:

  1. Car mods – Maxime McNeil (VEX Performance)
  2. Tires and wheels – Kyle Ho (Spec R Motorsports)
  3. Getting on track at a reasonable cost – David Gray (Driver/Instructor)
  4. Ham Radio for Rally – Patrick Spencer (Calgary Amateur Radio Association)

Come join us for coffee and donuts, and some great conversation about getting on track.  Bring your questions! If you are able to, please register at the following link so we have an idea of numbers:

MUDLARK TSD RALLY INFO

The second TSD rally in the series is only two weeks away. It’s the cheapest fun on four wheels, the easiest entry into proper rally racing, and ANYone can do it (non-drivers navigate). You don’t need a caged car – the fam mobile will do. You don’t even need helmets. Just some simple safety equipment, plus an evening class to learn the navigational how-to’s (kids can do it, and have!), and you’re off. You can also volunteer, which is an absolutely primo way to get involved and started in rally. Mudlark Rally info can be found at the sign-up at:

Don’t let this fun opportunity pass you by.

CSCC LAPPING DAY AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN MOTORSPORTS

I’ve copied the following from the registration page on MotorsportReg.com because there’s no point in re-inventing the wheel, right? Get it? …. I’ll see myself out.

“Race season is almost here! CSCC will be running our first lapping event of the season on Saturday, May 4th 1:00-4:30 at Rocky Mountain Motorsports (40 minutes north of Calgary). For those of you who sign up before end of day on April 21, we are drawing for a Door Prize of a courtesy of the sponsorship of RallySport.ca and the Calgary Sports Car Club. The cost of the event for members is $199 and non-members is $249.

Registration at the track opens at 11:40 am. Please try to arrive no later than 12:00 noon for beginners and 12:20 for advanced and intermediate drivers, to allow organized entry to the track. Registration can take a few minutes per car, so if everyone shows up at the last minute, it can be hard to get everyone registered and out onto the track on time.

This is a CSCC event for everyone to allow you to enjoy driving your car in a controlled track environment. This is a not a race, you will not be timed. Lapping is driving your car around the track with a small group of others with similar experience. Passing is allowed only on specified longer straights, when the driver in front acknowledges that they know they are being passed. Drivers will have 3 sessions of approximately 20 minutes each. We will be leading some parade laps for CSCC members and members of WCMA affiliated clubs to follow in their own vehicles around the track at safe speeds following the last session. Spectators who are not club members can ride with a member during the parade laps, or for the price of a club membership can drive their own car.”

Door prize, you say?! Plus, if you can figure out how to do a lapping day at RMM cheaper than this, you should. That is all. Get complete info and register here:

RALLY TEST DAY MAY 5

From Rally Director, Rob Jackett:

“Testing Testing 1-2-3! Summer Rally Test Day is here. Bring out your WCRC Stage Rally car for a Test Day on the South Jumpingpound Loop. It’ll be a great day with fellow teams that are testing/shaking down their car for Rocky Mountain Rally and Pacific Forest Rally coming up soon in 7 weeks! The Test Loop has been changed a bit…. so, teams should come out to drive the new layout of corners. All the info can be found at:

Also! We need and love volunteers! An off-duty EMS is needed, as well as radio operators, and general volunteers. It’s a great way to learn about rally and get close to the action in a non-competitive environment. Volunteer sign-up can be found at:

We love rally! And it’s the foundation of our club, so if you also love it but don’t have a car, you can still get on out and volunteer – it’s the closest you can get to the action! If you have questions, e-mail Rob at rob.jackett@cscc.ab.ca. See you there!

CSCC MONTHLY BOARD MEETING AND INFO

Our May board meeting is coming up on Thursday, May 2, starting at 6:30pm if you want to start watching a racing movie with us and 7:30pm if you’d like to attend the business meeting. We finish the movie after the meeting. The beers and pop are cold and we always have chips. See you at the clubhouse (4215 – 80 Ave NE) – all are welcome, including the kiddo’s!

CELEBRATING VOLUNTEERS

We can’t say enough about the importance of volunteers. A lot of the good things in life don’t happen without them. And that’s certainly the case for both planning and running race events. National Volunteer Week is April 21-27, and we are celebrating by holding our “Fast Track” event on Thursday, April 18 (see complete info, above). Everyone is welcome and if you’re a volunteer and let me know, I’ll buy you a beer (or pop!). ????

CLUBHOUSE NEWS

You may know that the Calgary Amateur Radio Association club occupies part of the basement of the clubhouse and most of the antennas in the yard belong to them. Recently, they provided a stack of beautiful treated cedar wood boards, and we’re going to work with them to build a deck on the south side of the building sometime this summer. Stay tuned to find out when in case you want to come out and swing a hammer with us. There are sure to be burgers and beers. The name of the game is relationship-building, and how can a sunny deck not help with that.

UPDATED RACE DAYS SCHEDULE

See, I told you things were heating up! A complete list of race dates for central-to-southern Alberta is attached, for your reference. It includes only car-related events (no bikes, trucks, kart). It provides events-at-a-glance and so hopefully it’s helpful to you as you plan out your summer. If you know of anything that would be good to add, do let me know.

That’s all for now! Enjoy this great weather. See you at something.
